Dairy farmers protect the environment and wildlife on and around their farms. Here's how they do it.
Caring for the Environment
Dairy farmers protect the environment and wildlife on and around their farms.
Dairy farms play an important role in rural Britain, with farmers taking great care and pride in protecting the environment.
Britain's hedgerows, with their thriving wildlife, are actually maintained by farmers. As well as providing a natural boundary between pastures, hedges are trimmed, out of the nesting season, to provide a breeding ground for birds and other wildlife.
Many dairy farmers also create 'wildlife corridors' by leaving a
strip of grass around the edge of the pastures, plant trees and
wooded areas and establish ponds to attract wildlife.
Jason Bayley, dairy farmer, says:
Since we've let the hedgerows grow taller and put in bird
boxes, we're seeing more wildlife around the farm. In terms of
minimising our carbon footprint it's really about efficient
management - good slurry storage, efficient fertiliser use and the
right feed for our cows.
