Did you know that there are more cows in Britain than there are people in Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester put together?
Why are calves separated from their mothers?
Experts recommend that calves spend the first day feeding from their mother to ensure that they receive colostrum, which contains high levels of nutrients and antibodies, and helps them to grow and develop their immune systems. Calves are then cared for in dedicated rearing areas.
Here, along with other calves of a similar age, they are given specialist care to ensure that they reach peak condition in a protected environment. The Farm Animal Welfare Council recognises that weaning should take place at an early age in order to minimise stress to the cows.
