Did you know that there are more cows in Britain than there are people in Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester put together?

Farmers minimise the risk of pollution

Do manure and slurry pollute rivers and waterways?

Some farmers use cow manure and wastewater to create slurry, a nutritious fertiliser for plants.

Slurry can be applied using a variety of methods, including injecting it into the soil to help it reach the root of the plant. Dairy farmers strive to use techniques that reduce bad smells and minimise the risk of water pollution.

The Environment Agency's Spotlight on Business Report 2008 revealed that pollution incidents from agriculture in England and Wales are at their lowest ever levels.
