Did you know that there are more cows in Britain than there are people in Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester put together?
What do cows eat?
Cows need a tasty, constant diet to stay healthy. Cow nutritionist Tim Davies says: "They need a nutritionally balanced diet. If farmers get this right, health and welfare will improve - and the cows may produce more milk as well."
The majority of British dairy cows eat grass during the summer and silage (preserved grass or maize) in the winter. This is usually supplemented with dry feeds such as cereals and protein feeds with added vitamins and minerals. Each dairy cow eats between 25 and 50 kg of feed per day and needs a constant and regular supply of fresh water to drink.
The amount of feed a cow eats depends on the breed, age and stage of lactation and this is why many farmers use expert advisors to develop the correct diet.
