Hedgerows
Some hedges in Britain date back to the Bronze age - so it's easy to understand why they're an integral part of the British landscape. As custodians of the countryside, farmers have an important role to play in conserving them.
Dairy farmers maintain the hedges lining their fields to control
the herds whilst grazing and to provide natural weather and wind
barriers.
Hedgerows also provide an excellent breeding ground for birds and
other wildlife, which farmers help flourish by regular hedge
trimming, out of the nesting season.
Many dairy farmers also create 'wildlife corridors' by leaving a
strip of grass around the edge of the pastures, as well as planting
trees and wooded areas and establishing ponds to attract
wildlife.
