Milk tank
What would you do without a fridge? We all rely on storage in one way or another, and for dairy farmers, storing the milk they produce is vital.
A typical milk tank can hold up to 10,000 litres of milk (enough for around 65,000 bowls of cereal!) and keeps the temperature at 4ºC (about the same temperature as your fridge) for optimal freshness.
The tank is usually made from stainless steel and is cleaned by
the farmer after each collection. This usually happens daily, with
the driver checking the temperature of the milk before transferring
it to his vehicle. The driver also collects samples to test milk
quality before transporting it to the dairy.
Of all milk produced on British dairy farms, around half is
pasteurised for drinking while the other half is turned into
cheese, butter, dairy spreads or other nutritious dairy
products.

We drink around 5 billion litres of milk in Britain each year - the equivalent of 2,000 Olympic-size swimming pools or enough to drink a glass of milk every day for 54 million years.
