Silage clamp

Some of us may survive on coffee in the morning but cows need a nutritious, constant diet all year around. That's why silage is such an important food source in the winter.

Silage is made by harvesting grass, maize or wholecrop wheat and storing it in a 'clamp' covered by an airtight plastic sheet, sometimes using recycled tyres to weigh it down. The crop slowly ferments to become silage, changing colour from green to brown during the process.

Some dairy farmers have separate silage clamps for wholecrop wheat, maize and grass.

We drink around 5 billion litres of milk in Britain each year - the equivalent of 2,000 Olympic-size swimming pools or enough to drink a glass of milk every day for 54 million years.
