Silage Clamp

The silage ‘clamp’ provides an important food source for dairy cows in the winter.

Some of us may survive on coffee in the morning but cows need a nutritious, constant diet all year around. That's why silage is such an important food source in the winter.

Silage is made by harvesting grass, maize or wholecrop wheat and storing it in a 'clamp' covered by an airtight plastic sheet, sometimes using recycled tyres to weigh it down. The crop slowly ferments to become silage, changing colour from green to brown during the process.

Some dairy farmers have separate silage clamps for wholecrop wheat, maize and grass.
